CHAPTER 10

KIRBY

Barely awake, I smacked the panic button with the back of my hand. After my last heat at the studio, it must have become a reflex—the first sign of a wave, just a twinge in my lower back, and I was reaching for the button.

Brian burst into the room in his pajamas with Hugh on his heels.

“Are you okay?” Hugh blurted.

“Calm down,” I grumbled. “We’ve got time.”

I sat up on the bed, and he hovered awkwardly. “Can I get you anything?”

“Water?”

I handed him the empty glass from the nightstand, and he took it, presumably heading to the bar in the living room.

“How are you feeling, Kirby?”

“We got a few minutes before it’s full on.”

“Good. I want some foreplay. We’re only waiting for Cameron.”

Right then, the cameraman came in, buttoning up his jeans.

“Hi. Show time?”

“Yes.” Brian rubbed his hands, like always.

Hugh brought two tall glasses with water and two extra bottles plus straws.

“Put the bottles under the bed, Hugh,” Brian said. “We can’t have any labels in the frame.”

“Oh. Sure.”

“Cameron?”

He was tightening a support vest with a stabilizer around his torso. Since he was relatively slight, he used the mechanical arm to hold the heavy camera at odd angles. “Cameras one and two are running. Thirty seconds and I’m good to go with number three.” Brian walked over to the stationary cameras and glanced at the screens. “The lighting has been ready since yesterday.”

A sudden flood of light blinded me before my eyes slowly adjusted.

“Great,” Brian said. “Guys. The first three waves, I’ll give you more specific instructions, and once we have that, we can freestyle the rest. Now I want kissing on the bed and teasing. As long as we have time for. Kirby, when you feel it getting stronger, show me all the needy, no holding back on me. Feel free to move around, but the knotting should happen while Hugh spoons you on the bed with your legs spread, so we can get a close-up.”

I glanced at Hugh, who was glaring at Brian with an expression that could be translated as focus—if you didn’t know him. He was annoyed. I wouldn’t say I told him so, but I’d told him so.

“We’re good to go,” Cameron said.

Brian clapped, and it was quiet.

Hugh just stood there, unmoving, looking at me. He seemed a little stunned.

So I raised my eyebrows at him and pulled the duvet off me. I was naked underneath.

That made him move.

He climbed onto the bed and leaned close, his eyes searching mine. Like he was asking for permission again. His scent reached my nose, musky and woodsy, and my insides quivered. The buildup might be shorter than Brian thought.

I lifted my hand and gently placed it on the side of Hugh’s neck.

“This is it,” I whispered. “Ready?”

Instead of replying, he dove in.

In the tangle of emotions, the one I could recognize was relief. Maybe. As soon as our tongues touched, all the tension I’d carried for the past few days seemed to melt away. Had I missed him? He tasted like home.
